He graduated from the law faculties of universities in Geneva and Vienna. His parents were killed in a robbery in Rostov-on-Don in 1911. His father, a first-generation Christian, had him christened with the Latin form of his name, Sabelius. Tartakower was born on 21 February 1887 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, to Austrian citizens of Jewish origin.
